Heated units, and when they are worth it

Placement in winter is different
- Out of the prevailing wind. Wind strips heat from the unit faster than still air at the same temperature, and it drives snow into the door gap.
- Away from roof drip lines. Meltwater refreezing at the base is the most common cause of a unit that will not open.
- Off the plow path. On a residential job, that means near the street end of the driveway but not in the windrow. In an alley, tight against the garage side rather than in the center.
